“Do You Copy?” is an indie horror game that I think I’ll sort of use for inspiration on how our monster will work. While we are still leaving the monster ambiguous, the goat man is what I envision the monster to be. This is for multiple reasons, be it that not many goat man horror movies exists,or that the goat man has a power set that would be perfect for a horror movie. Talking of goat mans power set, according to “Do You Copy?”he had the generic super strength, speed, etc., but he also had a very unique power perfect for a horror movie. The goat man could mimic peoples voices to lure its victims to their death.

Lots of horror movies have a sort of gimmick the characters have to overcome. Like that new horror movie Fantasy Island I keep seeing trailers for, its gimmick is that the island twists your wishes to torture you. That’s why I think being able to mimic voices could be the gimmick for our monster. If the monster is able to mimic voices, then maybe we could have a character running from the monster, then hear a friend of theirs and follow the voice only to find the monster lying in wait to murder them. We could use this to make the audience worry every time we hear somebody we can’t see. I talked in an earlier blog post about the bait and switch, and this could be the perfect tool for that! If we have intense music playing over someone following a voice after showing the monster mimics voices, we could bait the audience into thinking it is a trap, only to have the actual person appear.
Another big reason I’d like to use this an inspiration is the setting. It is set in a park, just like we are likely to shoot our opening in. This means that we could sort of recreate the general events of the game. Not directly, obviously, but say we could have a park ranger come to save our teens, and they have to figure out if it is really the ranger or if it is the monster? Like a big climactic point where the last survivor hears the same voice coming from two directions and has to decide which way to go? I think that could make for a very intense climax to our movie. Now, while this helps us with our monster powers and climax inspiration, the middle of the movie needs some filling out. If we just have the voice mimic power, then we could only do so much before it become repetitive. So, I want to incorporate a weakness in our monster the character can use to survive until that climax I mentioned. So, next post, I will look at another game “Until Dawn”, and how its use of exploiting monster weakness can help our movies potential monster.
